📖 Verse 1

ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

“Al-Qāri‘ah” is the tremendous calamity that knocks and strikes hearts with terror—one of the names of the Day of Resurrection.

A name of the Last Day emphasizing its shocking impact.

مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

Questioning magnifies its gravity—what is this Calamity in its horror and enormity?

۞ Mā al-Qāri‘ah ۞

Rhetorical question to stress its awe.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

Further emphasis: even you would not know its true nature except by Allah’s informing—its terrors exceed imagination.

۞ Wa mā adrāka ۞

A formula used to magnify and clarify.

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ

People will be like scattered moths—confused, swarming, colliding—showing their weakness and panic.

۞ Kal-farāshi al-mabthūth ۞

A picture of utter dispersal and disarray.

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

Mountains—firm today—will become like teased, colored wool: weightless, blown about.

۞ Kal-‘ihni al-manfūsh ۞

Symbol of total disintegration and lightness.

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

Whoever’s scales are heavy with righteous deeds—due to faith and obedience—

۞ Thaqulat mawāzīnuh ۞

Weight here signifies accepted good deeds.

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

—will enjoy a pleasant, satisfying life in Paradise.

۞ ‘īshah rāḍiyah ۞

Life that pleases the soul completely.

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

But whoever’s scales are light—due to lack of faith and righteous deeds—

۞ Khaffat mawāzīnuh ۞

Indicates deficiency or loss of accepted good deeds.

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

His “mother” (refuge and destination) will be al-Hāwiyah—the abyss of Hell.

۞ Ummuhu Hāwiyah ۞

Metaphor for the place one returns to and settles in.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):

Again the formula of magnification—what will inform you of what the Abyss is?

۞ Mā hiya ۞

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

A fire intensely hot—extreme heat and punishment reserved for those with light scales.
