📖 Verse 1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاٱلَّذِينَءَامَنُوا۟لَاتَتَّخِذُوا۟عَدُوِّىوَعَدُوَّكُمْأَوْلِيَآءَتُلْقُونَإِلَيْهِمبِٱلْمَوَدَّةِوَقَدْكَفَرُوا۟بِمَاجَآءَكُممِّنَٱلْحَقِّيُخْرِجُونَٱلرَّسُولَوَإِيَّاكُمْأَنتُؤْمِنُوا۟بِٱللَّهِرَبِّكُمْإِنكُنتُمْخَرَجْتُمْجِهَـٰدًۭافِىسَبِيلِىوَٱبْتِغَآءَمَرْضَاتِىتُسِرُّونَإِلَيْهِمبِٱلْمَوَدَّةِوَأَنَا۠أَعْلَمُبِمَآأَخْفَيْتُمْوَمَآأَعْلَنتُمْوَمَنيَفْعَلْهُمِنكُمْفَقَدْضَلَّسَوَآءَٱلسَّبِيلِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah forbids the believers from taking His enemies and their enemies as close allies, especially when those people rejected the truth and expelled the Messenger ﷺ and the believers for their faith. Hidden affection and secret support for them is misguidance.
Loyalty to faith comes before emotional ties with those openly fighting the truth.
📖 Verse 2
إِنيَثْقَفُوكُمْيَكُونُوا۟لَكُمْأَعْدَآءًۭوَيَبْسُطُوٓا۟إِلَيْكُمْأَيْدِيَهُمْوَأَلْسِنَتَهُمبِٱلسُّوٓءِوَوَدُّوا۟لَوْتَكْفُرُونَ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah explains the depth of their hostility: if they gain power, they will show open enmity through harm in action and speech, and their greatest wish is that the believers abandon faith.
The enemy of faith is not satisfied until faith itself is lost.
📖 Verse 3
لَنتَنفَعَكُمْأَرْحَامُكُمْوَلَآأَوْلَـٰدُكُمْيَوْمَٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِيَفْصِلُبَيْنَكُمْوَٱللَّهُبِمَاتَعْمَلُونَبَصِيرٌۭ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Relatives and children will not protect anyone on the Day of Resurrection. Allah will judge between all people, so worldly attachments must not lead a believer to support disbelief.
No family bond can replace obedience to Allah on the Last Day.
📖 Verse 4
قَدْكَانَتْلَكُمْأُسْوَةٌحَسَنَةٌۭفِىٓإِبْرَٰهِيمَوَٱلَّذِينَمَعَهُۥٓإِذْقَالُوا۟لِقَوْمِهِمْإِنَّابُرَءَٰٓؤُا۟مِنكُمْوَمِمَّاتَعْبُدُونَمِندُونِٱللَّهِكَفَرْنَابِكُمْوَبَدَابَيْنَنَاوَبَيْنَكُمُٱلْعَدَٰوَةُوَٱلْبَغْضَآءُأَبَدًاحَتَّىٰتُؤْمِنُوا۟بِٱللَّهِوَحْدَهُۥٓإِلَّاقَوْلَإِبْرَٰهِيمَلِأَبِيهِلَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّلَكَوَمَآأَمْلِكُلَكَمِنَٱللَّهِمِنشَىْءٍۢرَّبَّنَاعَلَيْكَتَوَكَّلْنَاوَإِلَيْكَأَنَبْنَاوَإِلَيْكَٱلْمَصِيرُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The believers are given a noble example in Ibrahim and those with him when they openly renounced shirk and its people, declared enmity to disbelief until faith in Allah alone is established, and relied fully upon their Lord.
Ibrahim’s stand teaches clear disavowal of shirk together with complete trust in Allah.
📖 Verse 5
رَبَّنَالَاتَجْعَلْنَافِتْنَةًۭلِّلَّذِينَكَفَرُوا۟وَٱغْفِرْلَنَارَبَّنَآإِنَّكَأَنتَٱلْعَزِيزُٱلْحَكِيمُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
This is the supplication of the believers: they ask Allah not to make them a trial for the disbelievers by letting them dominate because of believers’ shortcomings, and they ask for forgiveness and aid from the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Victory, safety, and forgiveness are all sought from Allah alone.
📖 Verse 6
لَقَدْكَانَلَكُمْفِيهِمْأُسْوَةٌحَسَنَةٌلِّمَنكَانَيَرْجُوا۟ٱللَّهَوَٱلْيَوْمَٱلْـَٔاخِرَوَمَنيَتَوَلَّفَإِنَّٱللَّهَهُوَٱلْغَنِىُّٱلْحَمِيدُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah repeats that Ibrahim and his followers are the best example for those who truly hope for Allah and the Last Day. Whoever turns away only harms himself, for Allah is completely free of need and perfectly praiseworthy.
Hope in Allah and the Hereafter makes following the prophets easier.
📖 Verse 7
عَسَىٱللَّهُأَنيَجْعَلَبَيْنَكُمْوَبَيْنَٱلَّذِينَعَادَيْتُممِّنْهُممَّوَدَّةًۭوَٱللَّهُقَدِيرٌۭوَٱللَّهُغَفُورٌۭرَّحِيمٌۭ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The current hostility need not last forever. Allah may turn enmity into affection if the former enemies accept faith, and He is fully able to change hearts and is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
Never despair of Allah guiding hearts and replacing hatred with faith-born love.
📖 Verse 8
لَّايَنْهَىٰكُمُٱللَّهُعَنِٱلَّذِينَلَمْيُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْفِىٱلدِّينِوَلَمْيُخْرِجُوكُممِّندِيَـٰرِكُمْأَنتَبَرُّوهُمْوَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟إِلَيْهِمْإِنَّٱللَّهَيُحِبُّٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah does not forbid kindness, fairness, and good treatment toward non-Muslims who do not fight the believers over religion and do not expel them from their homes. Justice remains beloved to Allah.
Islam forbids blind hostility and commands justice even with others.
📖 Verse 9
إِنَّمَايَنْهَىٰكُمُٱللَّهُعَنِٱلَّذِينَقَـٰتَلُوكُمْفِىٱلدِّينِوَأَخْرَجُوكُممِّندِيَـٰرِكُمْوَظَـٰهَرُوا۟عَلَىٰٓإِخْرَاجِكُمْأَنتَوَلَّوْهُمْوَمَنيَتَوَلَّهُمْفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَهُمُٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The prohibition concerns those who fight the believers because of religion, expel them, and support such expulsion. Taking them as allies in loyalty and support is wrongdoing, varying in severity according to the degree of allegiance.
Alliance with those waging war on the faith is not the same as simple worldly kindness.
📖 Verse 10
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاٱلَّذِينَءَامَنُوٓا۟إِذَاجَآءَكُمُٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُمُهَـٰجِرَٰتٍۢفَٱمْتَحِنُوهُنَّٱللَّهُأَعْلَمُبِإِيمَـٰنِهِنَّفَإِنْعَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّمُؤْمِنَـٰتٍۢفَلَاتَرْجِعُوهُنَّإِلَىٱلْكُفَّارِلَاهُنَّحِلٌّۭلَّهُمْوَلَاهُمْيَحِلُّونَلَهُنَّوَءَاتُوهُممَّآأَنفَقُوا۟وَلَاجُنَاحَعَلَيْكُمْأَنتَنكِحُوهُنَّإِذَآءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّأُجُورَهُنَّوَلَاتُمْسِكُوا۟بِعِصَمِٱلْكَوَافِرِوَسْـَٔلُوا۟مَآأَنفَقْتُمْوَلْيَسْـَٔلُوا۟مَآأَنفَقُوا۟ذَٰلِكُمْحُكْمُٱللَّهِيَحْكُمُبَيْنَكُمْوَٱللَّهُعَلِيمٌحَكِيمٌۭ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
When believing women migrated after the treaty, they were to be tested regarding the truth of their faith. If sincere, they were not to be returned to the disbelievers, marriage ties with disbelief were to be handled justly, and financial rights were to be returned fairly.
Allah’s rulings protect faith, honour treaties where possible, and preserve rights.
📖 Verse 11
وَإِنفَاتَكُمْشَىْءٌۭمِّنْأَزْوَٰجِكُمْإِلَىٱلْكُفَّارِفَعَاقَبْتُمْفَـَٔاتُوا۟ٱلَّذِينَذَهَبَتْأَزْوَٰجُهُممِّثْلَمَآأَنفَقُوا۟وَٱتَّقُوا۟ٱللَّهَٱلَّذِىٓأَنتُمبِهِۦمُؤْمِنُونَ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
If some wives joined the disbelievers and their husbands lost their dowers, then when compensation became possible, those husbands were to be repaid what they had spent. Allah then commands ongoing taqwa.
Even in difficult separation, Islam preserves people’s due rights.
📖 Verse 12
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاٱلنَّبِىُّإِذَاجَآءَكَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُيُبَايِعْنَكَعَلَىٰٓأَنلَّايُشْرِكْنَبِٱللَّهِشَيْـًۭٔاوَلَايَسْرِقْنَوَلَايَزْنِينَوَلَايَقْتُلْنَأَوْلَـٰدَهُنَّوَلَايَأْتِينَبِبُهْتَـٰنٍۢيَفْتَرِينَهُۥبَيْنَأَيْدِيهِنَّوَأَرْجُلِهِنَّوَلَايَعْصِينَكَفِىمَعْرُوفٍۙفَبَايِعْهُنَّوَٱسْتَغْفِرْلَهُنَّٱللَّهَإِنَّٱللَّهَغَفُورٌۭرَّحِيمٌۭ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to accept the pledge of believing women upon tawhid, purity, honesty, protection of life, truthful conduct, and obedience in what is right, then to seek Allah’s forgiveness for them.
The women’s pledge gathers major foundations of faith and righteous conduct.
📖 Verse 13
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاٱلَّذِينَءَامَنُوا۟لَاتَتَوَلَّوْا۟قَوْمًاغَضِبَٱللَّهُعَلَيْهِمْقَدْيَئِسُوا۟مِنَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِكَمَايَئِسَٱلْكُفَّارُمِنْأَصْحَـٰبِٱلْقُبُورِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Believers are warned again not to ally themselves with a people who earned Allah’s anger and who despair of the Hereafter just as disbelievers despair regarding the people of the graves.
The surah closes by sealing the command of loyalty to faith and distance from disbelief.
📚 Recap: Surah Al-Mumtahanah
Summary of the Meanings:
The surah opens by forbidding believers from giving loyal support to those who reject the truth and fight the people of faith, and it presents Ibrahim عليه السلام as the clear model in separating from shirk while relying fully upon Allah.
Allah distinguishes between hostile enemies and those who do not fight the believers. Justice, fairness, and kindness remain permitted and beloved with those who live peacefully.
The surah also teaches how believing women who migrated were examined, protected, and treated fairly, and it concludes with the noble pledge of women upon tawḥīd, honesty, chastity, obedience in good, and sincere faith.
