📖 Verse 1
قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah sent a group of jinn to listen to the Prophet ﷺ reciting the Qur’an, so that the proof would be established for them and they could warn their people. They listened attentively, understood its meanings, and described it as a wondrous and beautiful Qur’an containing lofty matters.

📖 Verse 2
يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَلَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Qur’an guides to right guidance — to what brings benefit in religious and worldly affairs. The jinn therefore believed in it and declared that they would never associate anyone with their Lord.
Right guidance includes what leads to benefit in religion and worldly life.

وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَى جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The majesty and greatness of our Lord are exalted. His perfect greatness and self-sufficiency mean that He is far above taking a wife or a child.

وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The foolish among the jinn used to say false and excessive things about Allah. Their foolishness was what led them to speak in this way.
Their foolish one spoke falsely about Allah because of his foolishness.
📖 Verse 5
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ تَقُولَ الْإِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
They had thought that humans and jinn would not dare tell lies about Allah, so they accepted what their leaders said. When the truth became clear to them, they followed it and submitted to it.
They had assumed that humans and jinn would not dare lie about Allah.

وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْإِنْسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Some humans used to seek refuge in jinn when afraid and distressed, and even worship them. This increased the jinn in arrogance and transgression; it may also mean that the jinn increased those humans in fear and distress.

وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا كَمَا ظَنَنْتُمْ أَنْ لَنْ يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ أَحَدًا

They had assumed, as others had, that Allah would not resurrect anyone after death. Al-Sa‘di explains that denying resurrection led them into shirk.

وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَاءَ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
They sought access to heaven but found it filled with strong guards and flaming missiles. This was unlike what they had known before.
They found the heaven strongly guarded and protected by flaming missiles.

وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ فَمَنْ يَسْتَمِعِ الْآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَابًا رَصَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Before that, they used to sit in positions to listen to heavenly news. Now whoever attempts to listen finds a flaming missile ready and waiting for him.
A flame now lies in wait for whoever tries to eavesdrop.

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِي أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The jinn realized that a great matter was intended for the people of earth, but they did not know whether it was evil or right guidance. Al-Sa‘di notes their good manners: they explicitly attributed right guidance to their Lord while leaving the doer of evil unmentioned.

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الصَّالِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَلِكَ كُنَّا طَرَائِقَ قِدَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Among the jinn are righteous ones and others below that level, including wicked and disbelieving ones. They are divided into different groups and paths.

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ نُعْجِزَ اللَّهَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَنْ نُعْجِزَهُ هَرَبًا

They recognized the perfection of Allah’s power and their own complete weakness. They cannot escape Allah on earth or by fleeing, and there is no refuge from His punishment except by seeking refuge with Him.

When they heard the Qur’an’s guidance and recognized its direction to the straight path, it affected their hearts and they believed. Whoever sincerely believes in his Lord need not fear deprivation or unjust burden; faith is a cause of good and protection from evil.

Among the jinn are Muslims who submit to Allah, and among them are those who deviate unjustly. Whoever submits has sought and reached the path of right guidance that leads to Paradise and its blessings.

وَأَمَّا الْقَاسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
As for those who deviate from justice and truth, they will be fuel for Hell. This is recompense for their deeds, not injustice from Allah.
The unjust are fuel for Hell as recompense for their deeds.

وَأَلَّوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُمْ مَاءً غَدَقًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
If they remained steadfast upon the straight way, Allah would give them abundant, pleasant water. Steadfastness on His path is a cause of provision and blessing.

لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَمَنْ يُعْرِضْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah gives abundance in order to test His servants and distinguish the truthful from others. Whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord — His Book — will be made to enter a severe and difficult punishment.
Abundant provision is also a test that distinguishes the truthful.

وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The mosques and places of worship are devoted to Allah alone. Therefore no one is to be invoked or worshipped alongside Him; worship must be sincere for Allah alone.
Places of worship are for Allah alone, so no one is invoked alongside Him.

وَأَنَّهُ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
When Allah’s servant, Muhammad ﷺ, stood worshipping Him and reciting the Qur’an, the jinn nearly crowded around him because of their eagerness to hear his recitation and receive his guidance.
The jinn crowded around the Prophet ﷺ as he worshipped Allah and recited the Qur’an.

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَدْعُو رَبِّي وَلَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ أَحَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to declare the reality of his call: he worships his Lord alone, affirms His oneness, and does not associate any partner with Him.
The Prophet ﷺ declares that his worship and invocation are for his Lord alone.

قُلْ إِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Prophet ﷺ does not independently possess the power to harm people or to grant them right guidance. He is a servant of Allah and has no independent control over these matters.
The Messenger has no independent power to cause harm or grant guidance.

قُلْ إِنِّي لَنْ يُجِيرَنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِنْ دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
No one could protect the Prophet ﷺ from Allah if he disobeyed Him, and he would find no refuge besides Allah. If this is true of the most perfect of creation, then others have even less power apart from Allah.
No one can protect a person from Allah, and there is no refuge besides Him.

إِلَّا بَلَاغًا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِسَالَاتِهِ وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Prophet’s special duty is to convey from Allah and deliver His messages, calling people to Him and establishing the proof. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger with the disbelief meant here will have the Fire of Hell, remaining there forever.

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَأَوْا مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
When those who reject the truth see the punishment they were promised, they will know who is truly weaker in helpers and fewer in number. No one will be able to rescue them, nor will they be able to help themselves.
When the promise arrives, the rejecters will see who truly lacks helpers and strength.

قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِي أَقَرِيبٌ مَا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُ رَبِّي أَمَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The Prophet ﷺ does not know whether the punishment they are promised is near or whether his Lord has appointed for it a more distant time. Its appointed time is known to Allah.
The exact time of what is promised belongs to Allah’s knowledge.

عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِ أَحَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah is the Knower of the unseen and hidden secrets. He does not disclose His unseen knowledge to anyone in an unrestricted way.
Allah alone possesses unrestricted knowledge of the unseen.

إِلَّا مَنِ ارْتَضَىٰ مِنْ رَسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْلُكُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ رَصَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The exception is a messenger whom Allah chooses and approves. Allah reveals to him what He wills of the unseen and places guards before and behind him to protect the revelation.

لِيَعْلَمَ أَنْ قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Through these safeguards the Messenger knows that the messengers have conveyed the messages of their Lord. Allah encompasses everything with them, hidden and apparent, and He has counted every single thing.

A group of jinn listened attentively to the Qur’an, recognized its wondrous guidance, believed in it, rejected shirk, and acknowledged the falsehoods they had previously accepted about Allah.
They found the heaven strongly guarded, recognized that a great matter had occurred, described the different paths among the jinn, and affirmed that no one can escape Allah. Hearing the guidance led them to sincere faith.

Al-Sa‘di highlights in this surah the reality and accountability of the jinn, the perfection of Qur’anic guidance, the preservation of revelation, pure tawhid, and that knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah except what He reveals to a chosen messenger.
