📖 Verse 1

إِذَاٱلسَّمَآءُٱنشَقَّتۡ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

When the sky is split open by Allah’s command on the Day of Resurrection.

* ٱنشَقَّتۡ *

Split open / torn apart.


📖 Verse 2

وَأَذِنَتۡلِرَبِّهَاوَحُقَّتۡ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

It listens to its Lord and submits fully, as it is bound to do.

* وَأَذِنَتۡ *

Listened and obeyed.

* وَحُقَّتۡ *

It is truly deserving (to obey).

وَإِذَاٱلۡأَرۡضُمُدَّتۡ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

And when the earth is stretched out and flattened for the gathering.

* مُدَّتۡ *

Stretched out / spread wide.


📖 Verse 4

وَأَلۡقَتۡمَافِيهَاوَتَخَلَّتۡ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

And it casts out what is within it and becomes emptied of it.

* وَتَخَلَّتۡ *

Emptied itself / became vacant.

وَأَذِنَتۡلِرَبِّهَاوَحُقَّتۡ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

It listens to its Lord and submits, as it is bound to do.

* وَحُقَّتۡ *

It is truly deserving (to obey).


📖 Verse 6

يَٰٓأَيُّهَاٱلۡإِنسَٰنُإِنَّكَكَادِحٌإِلَىٰرَبِّكَكَدۡحٗافَمُلَٰقِيهِ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

O human being, you are striving toward your Lord—and you will meet Him with your deeds.

* كَادِحٌ *

Striving with effort and toil.

* فَمُلَٰقِيهِ *

You will meet Him (and your deeds).


📖 Verse 7

فَأَمَّامَنۡأُوتِيَكِتَٰبَهُۥبِيَمِينِهِۦ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

As for the one given his record in his right hand, he is among the successful.

* كِتَٰبَهُۥ *

His record (of deeds).

* بِيَمِينِهِۦ *

In his right hand (a sign of success).

فَسَوۡفَيُحَاسَبُحِسَابٗايَسِيرٗا

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

He will be judged with an easy reckoning.

* حِسَابٗا يَسِيرٗا *

An easy reckoning.

وَيَنقَلِبُإِلَىٰٓأَهۡلِهِۦمَسۡرُورٗا

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

And he will return to his family joyful.

Joyful / delighted.

وَأَمَّامَنۡأُوتِيَكِتَٰبَهُۥوَرَآءَظَهۡرِهِۦ

But the one given his record behind his back is in loss.

Behind his back (a sign of loss).

فَسَوۡفَيَدۡعُواْثُبُورٗا

He will cry out for destruction.

وَيَصۡلَىٰسَعِيرًا

And he will enter a blazing Fire.

إِنَّهُۥكَانَفِيٓأَهۡلِهِۦمَسۡرُورٗا

For he used to live among his family joyful in this world.

Joyful (in الدنيا).

إِنَّهُۥظَنَّأَنلَّنيَحُورَ

Thinking he would never return to Allah.

* يَحُورَ *

To return (to Allah).

بَلَىٰٓۚإِنَّرَبَّهُۥكَانَبِهِۦبَصِيرٗا

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

Yes indeed—his Lord was always seeing him and fully aware of him.

* بَصِيرٗا *

All-seeing / fully aware.

فَلَآأُقۡسِمُبِٱلشَّفَقِ

Allah swears by the twilight glow.

Twilight glow (after sunset).

وَٱلَّيۡلِوَمَاوَسَقَ

And by the night and what it gathers and covers.

وَٱلۡقَمَرِإِذَاٱتَّسَقَ

And by the moon when it becomes full.

Became full (full moon).

لَتَرۡكَبُنَّطَبَقًاعَنطَبَقٖ

You will surely move from stage to stage, state to state.

* طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٖ *

Stage after stage / state after state.

فَمَالَهُمۡلَايُؤۡمِنُونَ

So what is wrong with them that they do not believe?

They do not believe.

وَإِذَاقُرِئَعَلَيۡهِمُٱلۡقُرۡءَانُلَايَسۡجُدُونَۤ۩

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

And when the Qur’an is recited to them, they do not prostrate in submission.

They do not prostrate (in submission).

بَلِٱلَّذِينَكَفَرُواْيُكَذِّبُونَ

Rather, those who disbelieve persist in denial.

They deny / reject.

وَٱللَّهُأَعۡلَمُبِمَايُوعُونَ

But Allah knows best what they conceal within themselves.

فَبَشِّرۡهُمبِعَذَابٍأَلِيمٍ

So give them news of a painful punishment.

Painful (punishment).

إِلَّاٱلَّذِينَءَامَنُواْوَعَمِلُواْٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِلَهُمۡأَجْرٌغَيْرُمَمْنُونِۭ

English Tafsir (Ibn Kathir):

Except those who believe and do righteous deeds—there is for them a reward that will not end.

* غَيْرُ مَمْنُونِۭ *

Never ending / not cut off.

Summary of the Meanings:

۞ أَهْوَالُ الْقِيَامَةِ ۞

The surah opens with the sky splitting and the earth spreading out, all obeying Allah’s command.
