Surah Al-Buruj (The Constellations)
This surah opens with solemn oaths, recalls the trial of the believers in the trench, warns of Allah’s severe grasp, and ends by honoring the Qur’an as glorious and preserved.

📖 Verse 1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِذَاتِٱلۡبُرُوجِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah swears by the sky with its great constellations and ordered signs, pointing to His perfect power and wisdom.

📖 Verse 2
وَٱلۡيَوۡمِٱلۡمَوۡعُودِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
He swears by the promised Day—the Day of Resurrection—when every deed will be repaid with complete justice.
The promised Day: the Resurrection.

وَشَاهِدٖوَمَشۡهُودٖ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
A comprehensive oath by every witness and everything witnessed, reminding that nothing is hidden from Allah.

قُتِلَأَصۡحَٰبُٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
A condemnation of the people of the trench who oppressed believers for their faith.
A trench / pit dug in the earth.

ٱلنَّارِذَاتِٱلۡوَقُودِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Their trench was a blazing fire, intensified by fuel—showing extreme cruelty and tyranny.
Fuel that makes the fire intense.
📖 Verse 6
إِذۡهُمۡعَلَيۡهَاقُعُودٞ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
They sat watching the fire, pleased with the torture they carried out.
Sitting by it—watching and approving.
📖 Verse 7
وَهُمۡعَلَىٰمَايَفۡعَلُونَبِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَشُهُودٞ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
They were present witnesses over what they did to the believers—committing oppression openly.
Witnesses over their ظلم.
📖 Verse 8
وَمَانَقَمُواْمِنۡهُمۡإِلَّآأَنيُؤۡمِنُواْبِٱللَّهِٱلۡعَزِيزِٱلۡحَمِيدِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
They had no grievance except that the believers had faith in Allah—the Mighty and Praiseworthy.
Mighty (unovercome) and Praiseworthy.
📖 Verse 9
ٱلَّذِيلَهُۥمُلۡكُٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِوَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚوَٱللَّهُعَلَىٰكُلِّشَيۡءٖشَهِيدٌ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah owns the heavens and earth and witnesses all things; the wrongdoers are fully encompassed and will be repaid.
Absolute dominion and ownership.
📖 Verse 10
إِنَّٱلَّذِينَفَتَنُواْٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَوَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِثُمَّلَمۡيَتُوبُواْفَلَهُمۡعَذَابُجَهَنَّمَوَلَهُمۡعَذَابُٱلۡحَرِيقِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Those who persecuted believing men and women and do not repent face Hell and the burning punishment—yet repentance is still invited.
Tried / persecuted believers for faith.

إِنَّٱلَّذِينَءَامَنُواْوَعَمِلُواْٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِلَهُمۡجَنَّٰتٞتَجۡرِيمِنتَحۡتِهَاٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۚذَٰلِكَٱلۡفَوۡزُٱلۡكَبِيرُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
The believers who combine faith with righteous deeds will have gardens with rivers beneath them—this is the great success.
The great success: Allah’s pleasure and Paradise.

إِنَّبَطۡشَرَبِّكَلَشَدِيدٌ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Allah’s grasp is severe against the people of great crimes; His justice will surely come.
Severe grasp / punishment.

إِنَّهُۥهُوَيُبۡدِئُوَيُعِيدُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
He begins creation and restores it—resurrection is easy for Him.
He originates and brings back.
📖 Verse 14
وَهُوَٱلۡغَفُورُٱلۡوَدُودُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
He is the Forgiving and the Loving—He forgives and shows mercy to those who return to Him.
The Loving—full of mercy for His believing servants.

ذُوٱلۡعَرۡشِٱلۡمَجِيدُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
He is the Owner of the Throne, the Glorious—perfect in majesty and dominion.
The Throne—symbol of supreme dominion.

فَعَّالٞلِّمَايُرِيدُ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
He does whatever He wills; nothing can prevent His decree.
Always accomplishing what He wills.

هَلۡأَتَىٰكَحَدِيثُٱلۡجُنُودِ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
A reminder of the histories of mighty armies that denied the messengers.
The armies of past nations.

فِرۡعَوۡنَوَثَمُودَ
English Tafsir (Al-Sa‘di):
Pharaoh and Thamud are examples of nations destroyed after denial and arrogance.
Examples of arrogant denial and destruction.

بَلِٱلَّذِينَكَفَرُواْفِيتَكۡذِيبٖ

The disbelievers persist in denial and opposition despite clear proofs.
Persistent denial of truth.

وَٱللَّهُمِنوَرَآئِهِممُّحِيطُۢ

Allah encompasses them from behind—none can escape His knowledge or His power.
Encompassing: none can escape.

بَلۡهُوَقُرۡءَانٞمَّجِيدٞ

Rather, it is a glorious Qur’an—honoured, vast in meaning and guidance.

It is in a preserved Tablet—protected from alteration, increase, or loss.

Summary of the Meanings (Tafsir Al-Sa‘di):
